According to the leading authority, Georg Feuerstein, PhD, Hatha Yoga is a medieval development, with its aim of cultivating an “adamantine body”. The goal of creating such a body is to prepare it for the very serious business of enlightenment. He puts it well when he says “… the disciplines of Hatha-Yoga are designed to help manifest the ultimate Reality in the finite human body-mind…… Hatha-Yoga is to live in the world out of the fullness of Self-realisation rather than to withdraw from life in order to gain enlightenment.” It is from this traditional form of Yoga that modern postural yoga has evolved, which is not surprising when the most successful teachers of Yoga in the west in the 20th century, B.K.S. Iyengar and K. Pattabhi Jois, were both taught in turn by a leading Hatha-Yoga teacher, T.S. Krishnamacharya.
